| First Annual Teresa McCoy Memorial Golf TournamentWhen my sister, Teresa, died on February 13, 2005, two days after my 46th birthday and three months and 1 day after her 47th birthday, all of us were left wondering who would teach all the children that she had not touched. Who would motivate them to achieve all that they were capable despite financial hardship? Teresa was one of my hero's in life. She was not born a "bright" child. She struggled with High School Math, Spelling, English, and Reading. She barely scored high enough on the SAT to get into Dalton Junior College. Her first shot at college was a failure, as expected. She failed out in no time-but then she was never "expected" to attend college. But then after a heart-breaking divorce, she picked herself up, some years later, reenrolled in college and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She went on to receive her Master's Degree-Summa Cum Laude. She accomplished this through hard work-not by a gift from God, per se. She was not born gifted with school smarts. She became smart through hard work. She should be a lesson for any child that wants to achieve beyond their potential. If Teresa can graduate from College- Summa Cum Laude, any child with the desire to achieve can accomplish the same thing. It requires hard work and determination! During her second attempt at college, she studied and attended class 16 hours each day, because she was not gifted with intelligence. She achieved what she achieved through desire. This is why Mike McCoy, her husband, initiated the Teresa McCoy Memorial Golf Tournament. We hope her memory lives forever. All proceeds from this fun outing will go to the Teresa McCoy Memorial Scholarship Fund. Recipients will be underprivileged Fernandina Beach area students, who share Teresa's desire to achieve beyond their family's financial status. My only hope is that these children appreciate that Teresa achieved what she achieved through hard work, and when she became an Educator, it was to help children such as herself, who had desire, but few gifts. When she taught at an all-black Elementary School in Augusta, GA, it was to motivate children with impoverished backgrounds and give them a hand up. With her Education accomplishments, she could have taught in the very best schools in Augusta or any other city, but this was not her objective. I hope this fund helps others to achieve what she achieved. Golf Tournament PlansPlans are currently underway to initiate this golf outing for November 18, 2005.
