| The Battle of Ichawaynochaway Swamp(From the History of Terrell County) John Helton, Thomas Helton, and Abram Helton each fought in the Creek Indian war in the Battle of Ichawaynochaway Swamp which took place July 25, 1836. We know from the Lumpkin Independent Newspaper that John, Thomas and Abram had only arrived and settled above Brooksville in the Winter of 1836. Following the Battle of Shepard's Plantation and the burning of the settlement of Roanoke in Stewart County, more than 300 Creek Indians moved southward along the foot trail leading south to Florida. The Creek strategy was to join Seminole Warriors in Florida and continue the resistance. The Creeks were pursued by Major Jernigan of Stewart County with 132 Regular and Volunteer militia. The battle occurred along the current day boundary of western Terrell County GA and Eastern Randolph County GA. Three State Militia soldiers were killed and thirteen were wounded. Eighteen Creeks were found dead. After the battle, a young Creek boy and girl were found in the Sugar Cane brake. The boy was given to Allen Matthews who lived near Abbeville, GA. The fate of the girl is unknown. Roster of Militia Participating in the Battle of Ichawaynochaway Swamp: John, L.
