| Sir Lancelot de HiltonOne of the really fun facts about Hilton Family history and tracing roots is the surprises that you find along the way. For instance, we found that one of our maternal great grandfathers was actually illegitimate. Apparently, my 2GGF was James Knight and he fathered numerous children by a woman listed as his housekeeper (Martha Rigsby) on Census'. (I don't think my wife would be so understanding.) It is these kinds of twists that make genealogical research so interesting and in some cases, it can wreck your whole tree if you overlook these facts. One very interesting fact about Hilton family history was the existence of Sir Lancelot de Hilton. The Hylton Family settled in England in 900 AD with Adam Hylton believed to be the patriarch. With the arrival of William the Conqueror, Sir Lancelot de Hilton and his two son's, Robert and Henry, joined William the conqueror as he advanced on London. Lancelot was killed near Faversham and in gratitude William deeded land to Lancelot's sons, which later became the home of Hylton Castle. Henry constructed the first Hylton castle around 1072. |
